Ethiopia

Did You Know?

Ethiopia is often referred to as the "Cradle of Humanity". In addition to centuries of religious history and folklore, the settlement of Harar in eastern Ethiopia was the location where paleontologists and Beatles fans, Donald Johanson and Tom Gray discovered "Lucy" (in the Sky with Diamonds) in 1974. The 3.2-million year old and 3.5 foot tall skeletal remains became known as the missing link between ape and man.

Project Update #8

Kind Words from Our Recent Guests from Ethiopia

Woinshet (centre), Brian and a visiting nurse student share a meal at her home in Addis Ababa. The western-style home is in an old Armenian part of town and quite uncharacteristic of accommodations in Ethiopia. The rent includes a security guard and gardener who live on-site!

As a follow up to the recent visit to the Edmonton office by John Baigent and David Cosco of Partners in the Horn of Africa and Ethiopian nurses Woinshet and Diseeta, Brian Adeney received the following email from Woinshet. She had met and spent time with both Brian and Katherine Johnston when they were in Ethiopia earlier this year working on the water protection project. Woinshet is presently traveling in British Columbia and also recently met with Katherine Johnston in Vancouver.

Hi, Brain how are you keeping? It was so grate to see you again and we had had a wonderfull time with you guys at EBA. I really like all of your staffs. I would like that if you thank them by the name of me please. Thank you for you nice gift you are very kind. My sister from Tenesse asked me about you and she is so amazed by the selections of of you gifts. She said that I always wish to have these things but, I have no idea why I couldn't got them? I think I was waiting for Brain at that day.

I hope I will see you again in Ethiopia. And also by my next trip I will visit you and your family.

Thank you,

 Woinshet

Brian appears to be getting far too much credit above and would like to take this opportunity to thank Krista Brodeur in the Edmonton office with providing the inspiration for the gift ideas.

They consisted of a selection of Purdy’s fine chocolates (local specialty) and foot massage soaps and ointments. In many areas of Ethiopia, less than half the people have footwear of any kind. Many of the shoes that do exist are made from old tire treads cut into sandals.
