Ethiopia

Did You Know?

Even though Ethiopia is only 6o north of the Equator, the weather is not as hot as you might think. Temperatures during the winter (November to March) are between 5oC at night and 28oC during the day. Much of the country where our projects are situated is at an elevation of 2500 meters, or higher.

Ethiopia Project Updates 2007 Spring Protection Program
Spring Protection Program

Spring Protection Program

This program will be a continuation of the Spring Protection work that EBA & Partners did in the Woredo (province) of North Wollo in 2006 except this time it will be in the south-central part of the country near Kasso Manso. Young women often carry 20 kg water jugs on their backs 5 to 10 km several times a day to obtain water of marginal quality from natural seeps and puddles that are shared with domestic cattle and wild animals. (see picture below).

Our goal is to complete another four spring protection projects in 2007. The project will include the assessment and design of the spring protection areas. The projects will involve the construction by hand of concrete water containment reservoirs. Rock filters will collect the water from the "ain" (eye of the spring) and direct it into the reservoir. There will be piped outflows from the reservoir for human use and the remainder of any flow drains immediately downstream and is used for livestock watering and irrigation.

The first step will be the evaluation of potential spring protection sites by David Cosco (Partners) and Lillian Zaremba (EBA) in January 2007. Actual construction will be carried out between April and July.
