Cassandra Budd, a fourth year Physics Student at the University of Alberta, has been working as a student intern at EBA Edmonton in the E111 Geophysics group for the last 12 months under the student intern program.
Cassandra returned to her studies at the University last January, but has taken time off the last couple of weeks to participate in a student expedition to Antarctica. This expedition has been operating for several years and provides an opportunity for students from both Canadian and international universities to be exposed to the Arctic Sciences through travelling on an expedition vessel with educators and researchers to various locations along the Antarctic Peninsula from Ushuaia Argentina. A once-in-a-lifetime experience that I am sure will mould the outlook of every student that participates, and provides an immeasurable opportunity for those students to make lifelong friends and contacts. This year is a particularly interesting year as it has taken place during the International Polar Year and has been endorsed by the IPY Committee.
I encourage anyone who is interested to check out the Antarctic University Expedition 2009 website and read some of the student comments that have been posted as well as see some of the breathtaking scenery.
Cassandra has had the opportunity, while working at EBA, to travel to a number of locations in the Canadian Arctic, including Northern Baffin Island. With some sponsorship help from EBA, she has now also had the chance to see the other end of the world. I am very pleased that EBA recognizes, values, and supports student endeavours in higher education. Both EBA and the students win.
Cassie is planning on presenting the highlights of her Antarctic adventure in Edmonton when she returns and is planning to work again at EBA this summer. She has also decided that majoring with a geophysics degree is far more interesting than just physics and will be concentrating on achieving that goal over the next 18 months.
